The Fear of Falling Behind (And Why It's a Lie)

Timelines invented by strangers have no bearing on your worth. Your pace is your own.

Comparison is quicksand. Scroll long enough and you will find someone younger, faster, or louder. The feeling of being late follows close behind.

The truth: there is no race. Your work unfolds on a timeline shaped by your responsibilities, your history, and your dreams.

Tracing the Origin

When the fear surfaces, ask whose expectation you are trying to satisfy. Most of the time it is not your own.

Challenge the story. Would you be happier if you reached the milestone sooner, or do you simply want relief from judgment?

Choosing Your Pace

Set milestones based on readiness, not pressure. Slow progress built on alignment outlasts rushed wins.

Celebrate the unique route you took. Detours often gave you skills the shortcut never would.

Keep it with You

  • Journal about the last time you felt behind and whose voice you heard.
  • Define success markers tied to your context, not a peer's highlight reel.
  • Share your pace with someone who respects it and ask for accountability when doubt returns.
